FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need a certificate to teach English?
It is sometimes possible to obtain a position without a teaching certificate, especially in areas of the world where English speakers are rare. It is increasingly difficult in many countries, though, to obtain any job, especially a good one, without some objective proof of your qualifications. Many positions require a TEFL certificate. In addition, the teacher training you receive will also help to make you feel both prepared for your position as well as equipped with the necessary tools to grow as an English teaching professional.

What kind of certificate do you offer and is it valid internationally?

We offer the TEFL certificate, recognized in virtually every country in the world.

Who are your teachers?
The teachers in Action in English's TEFL Teacher Training Boston program are highly qualified teachers of English as a Second/Foreign Language. All have training in both language learning theory and pedagogy. Many teachers have experience teaching both in the U.S. and overseas and all have worked with students of all ability-levels. Your teachers believe in a hands-on approach to training future ESL teachers and thus act as facilitators in order for you to have numerous opportunities to practice the skills learned in class.

Who will I practice teaching on?
You will practice your lessons first, on your peers and finally, on real ESL students who are part of the Olin Center program.

What does Action in English at the Olin Center do to help students find jobs?
In addition to editing your resume and videotaping practice interviews, we require that all students assemble a personal teaching portfolio which will enable you to present your qualifications as a professional. We have personal contact with ESL schools abroad and will provide you with letters of introduction. Finally, we provide access to hundreds of ESL job postings around the world.

How much money can I expect to earn in my first job?
How much you can earn overseas depends to some extent upon the country in which you work. Teachers who teach in countries where the economy is weak, like Mexico or Brazil, will be able to live comfortably on a teacher's salary, but not be able to save much. Many teachers who go to Japan and Korea are not only able to live comfortably while they are there, but are also able to save money for their return. (If you remain overseas for one year, your income may not even be taxable) Having a TEFL certificate provides students with access to the more reputable schools and language institutes. These schools in general provide better salaries and working conditions.

How big are the classes at Action in English?
All classes have twelve students or fewer in them. This allows for personal attention from the trainers and facilitates more discussion among classmates.
